Whether you’re a recent college graduate, a parent guiding a high school student through their next steps, or a seasoned professional seeking new challenges or feeling burnt out, this blog is designed to be a valuable resource for you! I invite you to check back every Thursday for my latest insights and tips, and I look forward to connecting with you in person at upcoming networking events.

Since it’s the month of Halloween, I’ve chosen to make my inaugural blog post about Ghost Jobs. Ghost jobs are realistic-looking job postings that the employer has no intention of filling. According to Resume Builder, 44% of employers have posted fake jobs this year, and unfortunately, 70% of employers feel that such fake postings are morally acceptable.

There are several reasons why employers post ghost jobs. Sometimes they want to assess the potential availability of talent or give the appearance of company growth to investors and competitors. Perhaps they are anticipating a possible resignation or trying to appease overworked employees by creating the illusion that they are hiring. Some employers even post ghost jobs to let current employees know they are replaceable!

What can you do to determine the authenticity of a job posting? The following clues may indicate the job is fake:

  • Job posting does not include contact information

  • Vague job description

  • Unclear timeline for application acceptance

  • Job posting that lasts for an extended period of time

  • Position is not posted on employer’s online job portal

In this season of tricks and treats, just keep in mind that not all job postings are authentic. Keep your wits about you, trust your instincts, and heed the potential warning signs of deception.
